We have launched a new logo that we will stamp onto the front of our books to illustrate the effort Hawthorn Press puts into caring for our world through our thoughtful books.
Earth caring, to us, means that we commission designers, proofreaders, illustrators and where possible printers who are local and sustainable. That way we keep work within the local community and cut down on transport costs.
We are mindful of our impact on the environment, we always use ethically sourced materials, such as FSC paper. We use recycled paper where possible, though recycled paper isn’t always the best choice, as it may have to be shipped in rather than sourced within the UK. Cover lamination can be an issue for publishers, so we are trialling a new cellulose lamination to replace the plastic that is commonly used (in most books), creating a truly compostable product, a success that we will repeat. We will always be looking for new and inventive ways to further our care for the world!
All this means that the cost of producing our books is higher than it might be if we printed our books in the Far East, as is the usual practice for trade publishers. However, you can be reassured that we’re doing what we can to minimise our impact on the environment, so our books may not be cheap, but they don’t cost the earth.
Hawthorn Press has been recognised for our earth caring efforts illustrated by our shortlisting for the Independent Publishers Guild Sustainability Award and our status as Plastic Free Champions by Surfers against Sewage.
