Description

Children love painting pictures and sharing them with family and friends. Painting offers a playful way of seeing the world. Colour touches children in profound ways, enriching their lives. Early artistic expression provides enduring soul food.

This workbook enables children to learn painting as they grow, fostering their skills in colour and composition while encouraging imagination and creativity. Angela Lord’s lively approach deepens observation and inspires painting from the heart of each colour.

Her method draws on years of colour research, painting, and teaching. She has studied good practice in Steiner-Waldorf schools, asking teachers and students what works and what doesn’t. She revisits Rudolf Steiner’s original watercolour suggestions for teachers. The colour insights of Goethe are another influence. This well-researched painting workbook is a must-have for teachers and home educators which:

  • Outlines a step-by-step, easy-to-follow guide to painting methods and exercises for students aged 6–15, matched to the child’s age and development based on the Steiner-Waldorf curriculum
  • Includes over 150 colour exercises
  • Shares paintings that convey the spontaneity and individuality of children’s work, and the imaginative ways colours can give rise to images
  • Invites students to enjoy colour, refreshing the soul as a counter to the screen world
  • Cultivates children’s confidence in painting as a skill for life
  • Suggests therapeutic exercises for learning support teachers
  • Covers the basics of classroom management for painting lessons
  • Gives helpful suggestions for designing successful art lessons
  • Reproduces Rudolf Steiner’s original colour sketches for the Friedwart School
  • Guides colour choices for classrooms, and introduces Lazure painting

Endorsements

‘Painting with Children is a gem of a book for any Waldorf Class Teacher. It is an enjoyable and informative read, suitable for those already confident with the watercolour techniques and those new to the experience.

The collation in the latter half of the book of references, techniques and sources adds further depth of an already useful book. It invites the reader to extend their investigation of the nature of colour and watercolour painting.’

Gabriel Knight, Art Teacher at Holywood Rudolf Steiner School

‘Angela has been my painting teacher over many years, inspiring and enabling me to develop a growing sensitivity to the dynamics of colour and form, whilst providing me with the much-needed practical skills both for my own painting practice and for my teaching work with children.’

Nick Vane, artist and retired Waldorf Teacher

‘A practical and clear children’s painting book, which is straightforward, supportive and helpful for teachers and parents. It provides a comprehensive range of inspiring examples and a wide selection of carefully developed colour exercises.

Angela is our school muralist and has shared her knowledge on this subject with ease with our teachers, for over 30 years at our school. This work will enable many to now learn more about these processes and do this in their own settings.’
