Baking Real Bread by Warren Lee Cohen is an invitation to share the magic of baking bread with children. So we were delighted to see a hands-on review by Jess Swann and her daughters in Star & Furrow magazine (Autumn 2024).

In her review Jess writes that “it is really lovely to have a book with recipes as well as stories, songs, activities and blessings (these other aspects of baking culture). The book has a really cosy feeling bringing together all these different aspects of baking”. She tried out some of the recipes with her children, starting with pita breads, which they enjoyed for lunch. Next came scones, which they shared with friends.
By far the most popular recipe was the one for cinnamon rolls, even though it has some tricky steps for new bakers. While they waited for the rolls to bake, Jess curled up with the girls to read some stories from the book. They enjoyed Rushen Coatie, a Scottish version of Cinderella, although they usually prefer stories with more girl power.
In conclusion, Jess would recommend this book to young families who would like to start a family tradition of baking with their children. It would also be a great resource for schools or nurseries/kindergartens with its wide range of activities, stories and recipes.
Star & Furrow is the journal of the Biodynamic Association (UK).
