Description

With wit and ingenuity, Maija Baric demonstrates how to transform wooden spoons, pieces of string, holey socks, outgrown clothes and other scrap materials into enchanting, durable and functional theatrical puppets.

Your puppet creations will bring something truly magical to the everyday world: use them to enliven storytime at home or in the classroom; ease children’s bedtime rituals; and make a birthday or other occasion really special. Children will love to create their own characters and stories too!

Puppet Theatre offers twelve detailed, beautifully illustrated projects with all the techniques you need for a simple puppet show or full theatrical performance. You can make finger, hand and knee puppets; make puppets from twigs, stones, potatoes and paper; construct rod puppets, marionettes and shadow theatre; animate your puppets and give each their own unique character; create costumes, staging, scenery, props, lighting and sound effects.

Maija Baric is the artistic director of Puppet Theatre Sampo in Helsinki, Finland. She is highly respected for her work in art education and puppetry, which she also teaches at the University of Helsinki.

Kristiina Louhi has won many awards for her work in children’s book illustration, including the UNICEF Award for the Best Illustrator of the Year.

“This book is fantastic! … You can’t help but want to unleash your creativity upon flicking through the pages. Children of all ages will adore this book due to the lively pictures that accompany the writing and fill every page, and children who don’t usually like crafts can still get involved by helping to build the theatre or providing sound effects. There really is something to spark everyone’s imaginations!” —Deborah Fullwood, Playwords

“For M and J it was like a box full of chocolates, full of so many possibilities of delight. They have been taking the book away, snuggling up against radiators and flicking through the pages before coming running to me to ask if we can make the hedgehog, the witch or the chickens. They’ve been inspired, and so have I. I couldn’t ask more of any book.” —Zoe Toft, Playing by the Book
